Grey Day…

It’s Saturday although I usually post on Fridays so we’ll just acknowledge the entire weekend instead lol. That means this post will be very brief.

Unseasonably warm weather and the prediction of rain always puts me in a relaxed mood. I know, it seems a tad bit weird right? Well, I am going out with my girls so this is my comfy but cute outfit. The highlight? This oversized sweater. I love this piece so much because it’s so carefully constructed and made for the off the shoulder purpose. I paired this sweater with a pair of flared black pants from Forever 21 and platform booties. Of course pictures are to follow, what are you doing this weekend and what are your plans for an outfits?

Happy Weekend!

Online Shopping Tips: 4 Ways to Buy What You Want!

So we all have done a bit of online shopping to find that either our size was sold out, the skirt (or dress) we wanted is too short for our taste or is only sold in certain sizes but we love it so much! Well I have a few remedies.

  1. Make use of a sewing machine or your local cleaners. A lot of times, we may see a dress, short or skirt and it’s only in the plus size section (for example). Get it anyway and get the pieces sized either by a local cleaners or “do-it-yourself” with a sewing tutorial. Don’t be afraid to grab a clothing piece, even from the men’s department, tailoring exists for a reason.

  2. Disregard shopping “rules”. Just because a section is labeled petite or tall doesn’t mean you can’t shop there. I find that I love the way a lot of the mini skirts are designed but I hate the short length. I do my virtual stroll to the tall department and grab the same skirt made for girls over a certain height, usually 5’9″. This secures a longer length on me while also getting the design I love! That goes for pants as well. Love a pair of pants but hate that they’re cropped? Get it in the “tall” sizes! Love a skirt but it’s too long? Grab the petite size instead! Problem solved!

  3. Cross websites for a particular brand. I love Polyvore for this! If you’re looking for a skirt by a certain brand and went to the actual site (for example Missguided) you can go over to ASOS.com or Nordstrom.com to search for that item. You never know, you may find it! It’s definitely worth the shot! That takes me to my last tip…

  4. Before buying an item, make sure it isn’t on sale elsewhere! When I first started online shopping I definitely made the mistake of buying without double checking. Trust me, it’s a “kicking-yourself” worthy mistake. (Insert eye roll).  Anyhoo, I suggest doing a search for the item you like and looking to see if it exists and may be offered at a discounted price. I recently found a top that was more than $90 elsewhere but only $18 on Bloomingdale’s site!

These tips all sounds pretty easy rigtipsWell, I hope that these tips are helpful to you all. I plan to do more shopping tips in the future (not on any particular time table). Which tip do think will be the most helpful in your next shopping trip?

Casual Friday: Gris Avec Rose Pale’

Happy Friday/Monday!

I know I was supposed to upload this Friday but I promise I didn’t for good reasons. Anyhoo, happy Monday too!

My obsession with pink and mauve grows. I was feeling rather girly and was going to opt for a totally different look but that girly feeling guided me right to this look.

Okay so look, I was torn between wearing a vest and a jacket because I sort of wanted to look like a bad girl and not so innocent” as softer pinks can have as an appeal. To remedy the looking too delicate, my pants have a teeny bit of deconstruction and I added a leather biker jacket. The info is all below! I’m out of here!

Laced With Style

I’m “jujjing” my style as you can see. I’ve been in love with lace, defined silhouettes and soft colors lately. I recently wore an outfit that featured a little bit of lace.

I loved that look so much! I am a big fan of lace but it’s been hard for me to incorporate it into my looks. Well, my mind would not let me go there. Lace has carried around a delicate reputation for bedrooms, special occasions and accents.

That reputation has changed. And before it changed, I changed. I started wearing lace how I wanted to and I’m proud to say that I expanded my style. Since I’m now even more drawn to lace, I found this lace top thrifting. Now let me tell you, I am IN LOVE with this top! I wish I purchased it from a regular retail store because I would love this top in nude, pink and black as well. But, it’s a one of a kind. To feel better, I went out and purchased a lace dress (that I will share in this blog soon) lol and I love that dress but the quality of the lace is just not there. The quality of this top is impeccable. The construction is perfect and doesn’t risk easy snagging.

As you can see, I wore a statement necklace over the top. I didn’t worry about anything but whether the two were a stylish combo lol. That’s the beauty of thrifting. I’ve found some alternatives for you ladies that love the looks of this top. In the meantime, share your thoughts!

Talk to you soon,

Denim Done Right!

Jeans have been around for a long time. Since they’ve become part of fashion they’ve evolve and expanded in style to the simple category of: denim. Denim is coveted as an intricate part of casual wear but is often layered for classic looks as well. The variety available is expanded more than before and now denim has become a popular part of current trends.

We’ve loved denim jackets for a few decades now but over the past few years, they’ve become increasingly popular. I remember wearing denim in the 90s when there was no thought really put into wearing them, there was such an abundance of jean jackets that it was hard not to just buy one and wear it.

Since the overload of the denim trend is back around, I decided to add more of it to my personal wardrobe. I paired two pieces of denim with similar washes. It makes the outfit appear more uniform. This isn’t my first denim on denim look. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not buying a trendy design but participating in a trend with a staple piece is not a bad idea. My outfit is denim on denim and I am wearing a denim button up dress as a maxi denim cardigan/top. I’ll share my thoughts on this subject a couple of blogs from now. In the meantime, how do you wear your denim? I’ll be back tomorrow with a brief review…

Black Is the New Black

One month into fall and I still haven’t been able to wear much “fall gear” because it’s been so warm. Around this time of year, it’s usually in the 50s (degrees) so it’s kind of shocking that the temperature has been over 80. Just this week we had 87 degrees in the forecast. Am I complaining? Nope because as simple humans, we usually miss what we no longer have lol. I must admit that when summer was around, I eventually got annoyed with the hot and humid days and stuffy, still nights.

Now, it’s been warm but in an intermittent type of way. Some days we have deep dips into crisp air but not long enough to get an outfit out there. Shoot, most of those crisp days it’s raining out. I snuck in an all black look on a week where the weather was swinging back and forth. Speaking of swinging back and forth, my mood has been swinging between blush, nude pink and black, gray and taupe. Everyone wants to claim that {insert subject} is the new black. Well I gotta say, my love for black is growing (more than I’d like it to actually) and I can’t help it. I’m sure you’ll see more black in my posts than previously seen.

Black is the new black and I’m full effect for the season. As a matter of fact, it seem that designers are putting an emphasis on black as well as navy, plum and burgundy. I’m wearing a faux leather jacket, a black button up skirt, I wanted a nude effect under the lace for modesty and black shirt open toe boots. Check the pics and let me know what you think.

Thank you for reading loves!

Rebranding…

*So let me just first apologize to you all for the uploads that shouldn’t be uploaded. I’ve been having issues with my blogging app and I’ve had a recent update so hopefully that fixes the issue. (Update: it hasn’t. I will be alerting my blogging platform.)

*Secondly, I am planning to have set blogging schedule that will include only two outfit looks per week. This will allow for me to release only the most quality posts with crisp, clear photos.

(Back to the purpose of this post).

I have been juggling a lot lately and it’s been making rethink the direction of my blog. I want The Style Cake to be connected to greatness. This means that I have some new commitments and am currently changing, overhauling and rebranding. I want you all to LOVE coming over to the blog and always feel that it was totally worth your time.

My look is all about expressing this change on my blog as well as the rebranding that I am going through. This look is very defined and contemporary but is modern, stylish and doesn’t rob the pockets even though it looks of quality. I feel true to my style and most comfortable when I am true to my style.

The menswear look of the coat that I’m wearing denotes my ownership of this blog as well as my plans and actions to move forward with this brand. Hopefully you all stick around and grow with me. Change is good and this change will be recognizable but beneficial. I promise you all will love what you see! On that note, please feel free to chat and I’ll reply. Stay tuned and leave feedback!

Talk to you all very soon,

Plaid and All That Glitters…

I am a fall fanatic. I think I’ve put that out there so it’s no shock that I’m excited to wear fall gear! I have to admit, when your mind is on one season, transition can be hard even if you have this styling grainy down pact. I’m the first to admit that I love to shop but since I’ve been lately shopping my closet, when I do make a purchase the piece MUST either be one of a kind, thrifted or on clearance.

I recently found this top I’m wearing and when I saw it I knew it was THE transition piece that I wanted to style for fall. I had seen this way top earlier in the year and fell in love but refused to pay the high price point for it. Actually I’d seen it on multiple sites and I prayed (not literally) that this top went on sale lol. So later on in the year about a few weeks ago, I checked a particular site on a hunch. Guess what?!! JACKPOT!!! I struck gold! This sucker was on sale!!! So I guess I sort of kinda believe that good things come to the patient. Well, I’m a go-getter so it has to apply to the situation lol.

Anyhoo, this top is by BlankNyc and I got it from Saks Fifth Avenue for 30% off the $18 price! That’s the price that I see of some high end brand thrifted items! Dont be afraid to shop high end department stores. You simply must know how to shop, knowing off hand what you’re looking for. I put this shirt together with a pair of semi-destroyed jeans and a simple pair of sandals. Let me know what you think and if you’ve scored any sales lately!

Fall 2016 Fashion Forecast #1

I’ve waited for this season all year! Lol. Trust me I LOVE summer and spring to but as one social media meme put it, “September is the January of the fashion world”. Now begin nuances of trends and ways to style these trends. I’m going to share with you some things that I’m positive will be trends and to-be trends that I am currently smitten with.

  1. Velvet: For some of you that remember George Constanza on Seinfeld, you remember his famous words “if it was socially acceptable I’d drape myself in velvet”. Lol while I don’t necessarily want to drape myself in velvet, I am simply in love with the fabric. I’ve already worn the fabric in the form of open toe heels recently and I can’t wait to wear more. Velvet is the fabric that always adds a bit of sensuality and elegance (almost an oxymoron) to any look. You got to get velvet in your wardrobe, I’ll definitely be incorporating it into mine this fall!

  2. Burnt orange and burgundy colors: it seems as if these colors are no brainers in a fall wardrobe. On the contrary, most times people shy away from burnt orange as it is an intense color. They also neglect to wear burgundy because of its red nature. Many end up choosing to wear more neutral colors or gray, black and navy blue. Don’t be afraid to wear a burgundy pair of boots or burnt orange leather jacket. It may seem as if you can’t wear such bold colors as a foundation for an outfit but in actuality, your look will have a bold and eye catching style!

  3. Fringe Heels: okay so, fringe heels are not necessarily new on the fashion horizon but I do feel that this trend was slipping away. Now it seems that this trend is making a major comeback! I recently grabbed a pair made popular last year by Steve Madden and wore it in my most recent ootd. Fringe detailing in boots is also going to be popular. Grab a fringed pair of heels and join the fun!

  4. Floral Prints: maybe I’m the only one obsessing over floral prints this fall but florals are not just for spring and summer. Grab a floral print with a black or navy background or with fall colored flowers and prints. Personally, I love marigolds (as a child I thought they were ugly), sunflowers and mum

Weekend White Out

HAPPY FRIDAY!

HAPPY SEPTEMBER!!

I’m just excited about everything over here! I had a rough patch as you know but I get to unwind and relax a bit this weekend. It’s a three day weekend before the kiddos go back to school and the homework drives me nuts lol. Since it’s Friday, let me me brief with my outfit deets. So we all know there’s an unwritten fashion rule about not wearing white after labor day. Well, call the fashion police because I intend to wear white this fall and winter!

That being said, the perfect look for me today was all already in my closet. A white tank and skirt you’ve all seen numerous times and a pair of fringe heels. (Fringe is so “in” this fall so do yourself a favor and grab some fringe heels now!) This is how I’m starting off September…very anti huh? Lol. Anyhoo, let’s go enjoy this long weekend!
