Style Lusts #2

I hope you enjoyed the first installment of this new blog series. I am back with more things that I am loving to add to style lusts. So here goes it:

1. Khaki Trench Coats:

All the rave usually during the summer and spring months, trench coats are a fabulous addition to any wardrobe. If you love a polished look and want to add any flair to an otherwise ordinary outfit, grab a safari khaki colored trench coat for the finishing touch. I had a trench coat years ago but I got rid of it because it wasn’t flattering on my post baby body. I am currently looking for a new trench and will share once I find THE one! I prefer Safari green or khaki for that classic look but but don’t be afraid to explore color such as navy, pink, peach, black and/or red.

2. Gladiator Knee High Heeled Sandals:

I am a gladiator sandal lover but I prefer my sandal with a heel. I found a few pair online, one which I purchased from Topshop. I couldn’t pass them up! They were almost $100 off the regular retail price. This is a great time to grab them if you love them. This time of the year is when most people travel to warmer climates so they are looking for resort wear. Gladiator heeled sandals are perfect for vacation styling. A basic kimono and these sandals are an instant outfit! When my heels arrive, I will be sure to share!

3. Dainty Necklace Sets:

I love a great piece of jewelry. In my previous Style Lusts post I talked about loving statement necklaces. Welp, on those days when you don’t feel like being decked out in full on jewelry, a simple dainty necklace set works best. They are so chic and the sets are a no brainer that don’t require trying to pair the perfect necklaces together for a nice balance. I would get three metal colors, rose gold, gold and silver toned. You can mix metals for a little extra flair! Check out Layered Chains for beautiful dainty pieces and use the code “thestylecake” for 10% off! Who doesn’t love a discount?

4. Choker “Necklaces”:

I am true fan of 90s style because it is so effortless while at the same time grungy and chic. I’m old enough to have worn the styles when they were hot. The Spice Girls, Brandi, Xscape, TLC, and more have all inspired 90s style. At one time or another, we’ve seen chokers on the runways, in magazines and major fashion figures. I am simply in love with chokers. Nowadays, the styles of chokers have evolved. I am lusting over a peach colored choker that I saw on a particular website. I guess I could make it myself but I strongly believe in supporting small businesses. Photo credit coming soon…

5. Finger/Knuckle Rings & Arm Cuffs:

I honestly love knuckle rings but I have the hardest time keeping them on. Most times, I end up taking them off halfway through the day. I don’t know why. I am desperately trying to get used to keeping them on. I also love hand cuffs and arm cuffs but I tend to do the same with them as well. They add a bit of sex appeal to any outfit but they are accessories and don’t sacrifice the modesty of any look. I have some and I am in LOVE!!! Photo credit coming soon…

6. Crochet Tops & Skirts:

So a few years back I started crocheting and I was actually getting good at it. Life happened and got in the way and I couldn’t finish what I started. I regret that. Well, not regret but I wish I hadn’t quit. I’ve found that crocheting interests me again and I am looking forward to making some pieces that I have been imagining in my head. My first project may actually be a clutch handbag (because I am obsessed with crochet at the moment) and I will be sure to share what I make. Just remember, crocheting is sexy!!

7. Pink & Nude Nail Polishes:

Oh how much may I express my love for nudes and pinks when it pertains to nail lacquers?! In the winter, everyone is looking for their next vacation to escape the cold. To celebrate the tropical climate I am planning to travel to, I would wear bright pink or nude colors. I will discuss some of my fave brands (updated) very soon. Now I know most people are into dark colors for the fall and winter seasons but in the winter I become a pink loving “girl”. I actually head to the salon this Thursday for a fill and guess what color I will be choosing? Yup! A bright pink! I know I’m going against the grain but that’s what style is all about, stand out!

8. Blonde Hair:

I’ve worn my hair out for the past couple of months and I am itching to wear a different color: blonde! I think softer colors in the winter are just glorious and feminine. As I have discussed before, I make a bit of a transition to what I consider winter colors for styling of all kind. I will be showing you guys my new style soon, a wig of course. Stay tuned…..

9. Bold Statement Clutch:

Need I say more? The simplest outfit can be made to pop with a banging bold clutch. I recently spotted one on Instagram that I need to grab. I will show you a picture but I will share where I made my purchase in a later post as I will do a review. Don’t be afraid to experiment with sequins, prints, sizes or even styles. To be continued…

10. Basic Heel Pumps:
Last thing that I am loving is a basic pump. A basic pump can take a rather plain outfit from “eh” to “wow”!! Every girl needs a nude pair and black pair in her closet. I recommend pumps that are not patent leather for a first pair. You can wear pumps with jeans and a tee, joggers, dresses, rompers and jumpsuits and an array of other styling options. I wouldn’t skimp on quality. For a lower end priced shoe with quality, try Steve Madden. They have the basic pump in a bunch of colors.

Now that you know what I am loving right now, tell me what you are loving right now. See you back here next week for more Style Lusts!

La Fourrure

Despite what my calendar says, the weather says it’s officially winter. It’s about 45 degrees and to me, that’s fur weather. Well, almost. I decided to go against the grain a bit and wear a fur shawl instead of a full on fur. Furs are extremely warm for bitterly cold climates and you won’t need much more outerwear coverage than that.

I bought this fur a couple years back while thrifting. The only thing I don’t like about it is the bit of shedding it does. I need to get the fur conditioned (treated) and it’ll be fine. To have that 1930’s bit of flair, I thought the fur would look awesome with a big floppy hat, a clutch bag, fur booties and simple basic outfit. Turtlenecks are my “thing” this season so this navy blue one is perfect against my “lace down the leg” leggings. Pretty simple right? That’s the point. I’ve been trying to show that you don’t need much to put together a haute look. I promise I’ll complicate my looks starting with the next look!!  *wink* My hat color is intentional to give some nudeness to an otherwise dark look. The brightness of the shawl gives the perfect tinge of elegance on an otherwise casual look. I didn’t want to take away or add anymore to the look so wearing my favorite black American Apparel clutch. Let me know what you think!! I’d love to hear from you!!!

Until tomorrow for another “Style Lusts” post….

Wildly Simple

This look was supposed to be up yesterday but with everyone a bit more distracted because of black Friday, I thought that Saturday would be a better time. Actually, today wasn’t exactly a bad time to post for me either lol. This outfit is fairly simple because I love simplicity when it comes to putting pieces together. You don’t need a lot in your wardrobe in order to put together a nice fit. In fact, my mother used to tell me that super models dress “simply” so I should never feel bad if I didn’t have a lot to put together a look. In other words, play up your “lack of” a wardrobe. I have enough things in my wardrobe to construct a many of outfits but sometimes less is more (and best). I decided against jewelry beyond my charm coin bracelet and hoop earrings. The wild parts of my outfit are the shoes and glasses. These pops of leopard print ignite the sassiness of the look!! Let me know what you think and I will see you back here Monday for another outfit look…

Late Fall/Early Winter Colors

I simply love the transition of one season to another. It seems that’s when the two seasons are most beautiful. Right about now, you can see from my last post that where I live, we’ve already had our first snowfall. In a very true transition, the leaves are still on some of the trees and two weeks prior the daily temperature was above 60 degrees. I’m not a winter lover but I am learning to embrace the season and not just focus on the snow on the roads, the frigid cold or the abundance of darkness due to daylight savings time.

I do love changing up the colors that I wear in the winter. For instance, in the fall I’m into oxblood, browns, golds, and reds to name a few. Once winter rolls around, the bright softness of the white of the snow encourages my mind to be inspired by softer colors. I relish in pinks, grays, nudes, whites, pale blues and peach colors.

Soft colors is behind the idea of this outfit. Since it’s still fall, I’m throwing in an abundance of black. It’s chic and cosmopolitan but still soft and girly. The bold lip adds the needed sass to strike a great balance. Since this is the “Friday” of the short week, this is the end of this post lol. I’m going to hang out…

Til Friday, bye Cupcakes!! 💋

New Blog Series: Style Lusts

I am an avid shopper. All that means is that I always have a “wish list” lol. This wish list has grown by the days and I thought that it might be time to start sharing things that I am lusting over for the moment. That being said, this will be a weekly series that I share every Tuesday. The things that I love will be complete with pictures and links (hopefully I will be able to list the links too). This series should be fun and will give you a “look” inside of this creative mind of mine to see some things that may appear on the blog. Feel free to comment and ask questions. In one of the posts for this series, there will be a giveaway!! Stay “tuned” for that!! Now, without further ado, let’s get right into our first Style Lusts post!!

First up:

  1. Capes & Cape Dresses (with Maxi Split Sleeves)

I have been seeing this dress since July and I fell in love when I saw it on Kim K. back in September. This dress is so chic, yet avant-garde at the same time. I love the classy and formal appeal that this dress has, all the while being stylish enough to wear out to an anniversary dinner at a restaurant. I thought that this dress deserved a spot on my list because it makes a statement all on its own. It will always make appearances in the fashion world because this design is vintage inspired. I can’t seem to find the exact dress so I purchased a cape (soon to be shown) but I plan to purchase a cape dress…I can’t resist!

2. The Fur Clutch

This is actually something that I designed and sketched some several years back (in my design book, yes I have one lol). Although I am not the first to “create” one (the idea or the actual bag), I like to think that I am always ahead of the game for when trends come back in style. I just start to have my heart set on something and in a couple of years, it seems to come back in style. Now, of course I’m not clairvoyant but fashions recycles and circulates and I am an avid researcher of it. This clutch bag has been something that I could have produced years ago but somehow I never got around to it. I bought one instead. A white fluffy, faux fur clutch. I already have an outfit planned to pair with this clutch…

3. Velvet Heels

In love with everything velvet, I have been searching for a pair of basic velvet high heel sandals. I have plum colored heels that are a platform. I saw a pair in a popular fashion magazine a few months back but was never able to find them online. Afterwards, Nastygal released a minimalist heel sandal on its site. This pair was reminiscent of a pair by designer Alexander Wang but for a fraction of the cost. As of recent, I’ve been seeing more velvet in the shoe game but I think I may break down and nab the minimalist heels from Nastygal…

4. Patent Leather Pumps

In yesterday’s blog post, I’m sure you noticed my knee high patent leather boots. Can you believe that they were almost purged?! Yeah, I al out made a huge mistake!! I’m so happy that I procrastinated on the purging of my shoes. I bought those boots from Victoria’s Secret years ago, almost 15 years ago to be exact. Ahhh, how I miss Victoria’s Secret selling clothes (not the PINK brand) and shoes! I have another pair of patent leather boots, on trend with the block heel. Again, they were purchased years ago. I’m searching my not only my closet but also the net for patent leather black pumps! The pair I am absolutely lusting after is the Louboutin So Kate heels in black and nude. Yes, I want both. Since I’m frugal, I’ll be searching for a pair either on consignment or previously owned. *wink*

 5. Fur Stoles

By now y’all know I love to shop my own closet for “hidden” fashion gems. Well, one gem that I’ve resorted to pulling out of my closet is my off white fur stole. Back in the day, fur stoles were regularly apart of wardrobes and outfits. In our more “modern” times, less clothing has become somewhat commonplace, in fact popular sot to speak. The fashion society has seemed to gravitate towards nakedness instead of detail and style. Now that it is cold where I live, the more clothing the better. I think fur stoles add a nice touch to finish any outfit. Don’t feel the need to wear it with a formal or after five look (I don’t). Feel free to rock a fur stole with a bit of sass in a casual outfit. I have an example of what I mean in an “ootd” coming ups soon….

6. Leather Satchel Tote Hangbags

Classic. Chic. Simple. Yep. That pretty much sums up all the things that I love about the satchel style tote handbag. The black everyday bag that I have currently I have grown tired of. I’ve had it for years and it has been good to me. I’m in the mood for change. The current bag I have will be purged. I’m on the hunt for the perfect satchel style tote bag. I’ve looked so far and either the price tag was too much or the bag lacked luster. This style bag is not as popular as the clutch right now but that’s the beauty of style, I wear what I like. I will be on the hunt for one to house all of my trinkets no trash from motherhood lol. Moms have to be fashionable too!!!

7. Leather (Liquid)  Leggings

These became a wide spread “something like a phenomenon” at a moment in time when American Apparel reintroduced them on fashion scene several years back. I say reintroduced because these were something that were initially a trend back in the 70s era of fashion. I will let you to click the link to let you see who looked so fab in their liquid leggings lol. That being said, I hid mine in the back of the closet because I had lost interest in them but I recently pulled them out! I can’t wait to wear them in a future outfit. They are generally thought of as sexy but even the most modest individual can tweak them to personal style for taste. Girl, go grab a pair throw on an oversized sweater!!

8. Black & White Tweed (anything)

I have a confession: I’m in love with tweed! It has been a life long attraction! Okay so I love herringbone, tweed and everything of the such that I look for it often. I just purchased a cape, I have two tweed skirts, tweed shorts, a tweed coat and now I want a tweed blazer for a funky ootd. Yup, I’m addicted. Lol. If you can, add something tweed to your wardrobe…

*(For tweed pic, see the patent leather shoe picture)

  9. Princess Cut (Fit and Flare) Coats

I’m a girl with a larger bottom half and so I love clothing pieces that flatter my shape. The fit and flare cut of anything (dress, coat, skirt) just does this for me. I found the perfect princess cut coat in one of my fave colors at the moment, pink. I was watching a video by Jackie Aina on YouTube and she did a haul that featured a coat that I simply fell in love with. The price point however was not my steez. In other words, I was not paying the price, I have children lol. No seriously, I could not fathom the price right now. I may be able to get my hands on it if it shows up on a bargain site. I will showcase the one that I got soon. This coat can make an outfit without even showing what’s under it. That is my kind of coat! I am assuming that this style will become widely popular soon so if you can,  grab one before the demand goes up (and while you still look like you have personal style and not following the crowd), please do!

10. Jeans & A Tee

So I guess I don’t need to go all out on this lust because everyone loves a great pair of jeans and good V neck tee! Or a graphic tee. Or an oversized tee. Or a simple white tee. Yup. A white tee. Lol. Boyfriend jeans, skinny jeans, mom jeans…need I go on? Yea, Levi’s, Jordache, Calvin Klein…see how I can’t stop? Style Lust.

11. Cloche Hats

Everyone is rocking hats these days. The wide brim floppy hat is popular. I’ve worn them and I happen to love them but something that has been drawing my attention. Cloche hats. These are THE most snazzy and stylish hats around. They were really trendy and popular during the late 1930s and in the 40s. If you are looking for one, you’ll have to spend a nice bit of change for purchase. The one I got was pricey but this is an investment piece for me. I will have it for a long time!

12. Blazers/Shorts Combo

I have an ootd planned with this combo. I honestly can’t remember if I did this type of outfit or not but just in case I have, I’ll be doing it again lol. That’s how much I love this combo. The chic contrast that you get from both shorts and blazer is awesome! Pair with boots, or another fave pair of heels and you’re good to go! Accessorize and there’s your outfit! No guess work.

 13. Bold Colored Plaid Scarves

This the season for such a style lust. I have already posted a couple of looks with bold colored and/or print scarves so you can probably tell that I love a good scarf. Scarves are a big trend this season and for a couple to come but you can ALWAYS wear a good scarf and in any season. I have a few and although I don’t think I will be buying any more any time soon, I will certainly be posting another ootd with a bold scarf. Don’t know how to wear it, grab a basic long sleeve tee with matching leggings and throw the scarf on top with a hat. See why it’s one of my style lusts?

 14. Statement Necklaces

Just like the next girl, I love a good statement piece. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces or a great head dress can really take an outfit to the next level. I have been into statement necklaces lately and adding them to my outfits. I will continue my styling of them for a while. I try to find pieces that are not seen on everyone for a sense of individuality and personal style. I’ve gotten rid of quite a bit but I have more to get rid of before I purchase any more. You get a lot of wear out of statement necklaces as they can “look” different depending on if the outfit is classic, bohemian, formal, etc.

 15. Jewel Embellished Turbans

We made it to the last style lust for this week. Thanks for sticking around! This one will be quick. I have been on the hunt for a cute head dress and I happen to like jeweled embellished turbans nowadays. I found a couple I can’t wait to show case them. Bad hair day, lazy day or flat out uninspired? Grab ones these babies and instant fashion statements!

Please let me know how you enjoyed this series. The next Style Lust list will be substantially shorter as I plan to only list between 3 and 5 lusts per post. If you have any current style lusts , don’t be shy. Please share! Until tomorrow….

Bye Cupcakes!

But It's Still Fall…

This past weekend produced some mouth opening situations however, none as shocking as the snow storm we got here in Michigan. The first snow fall. Like really? I was not ready at all. I mean, I had some things that were left over from the previous year (coats, boots, hats, a pair of gloves) but I was not closet ready. Several posts back, I talked about purging and getting rid of things that were no longer of any use in my wardrobe. Well I follow the rule of “in order to buy something new, something old must be sold/given away/thrown out”. I do not believe in accumulating “stuff”. The fact of the matter is, I had gotten rid of a lot of old things that were winter gear as a part of my purging. I honestly thought that I still had time to get the things that I wanted and needed before our first big snow fall. It’s technically still fall!!! But who am I kidding? I live in Michigan. The darn state is shaped like a mitten, it could snow at any time lol. I had to get ready…and fast!

Just a shameless plug, be sure to come back here tomorrow for a new series that I am starting here on my blog called Style Lusts. It will feature some things that I have my eye on at the moment as well as recently purchased things or things that I’ve pulled out of my closet. Some of those things had to make an appearance on today’s post. I can’t believe how cold it has gotten in just a matter of days. I definitely decided that I wanted to wear a coat for this look. There was no way I could not. However, I still show my style in this outfit, even with my coat on.

I found some old boots in my closet from over a decade ago that I purchased from Victoria’s Secret. They are genuine leather patent leather boots!! Rare nowadays. The patent leather allows the boots to stand out and pop against the entire look. I opted for a tweed coat (I LOVE tweed) with a fur collar. The collar can be taken off but I won’t be doing that because I  don’t ever need to wear a scarf when I wear that coat. For this outfit however, I did opt to wear one. Just for the sake of fashion lol. The houndstooth print accents and actually magnifies the look of the tweed. Underneath it all (the coat and what not), is a green wrap dress that I thrifted from the Goodwill. I didn’t wear any jewelry to avoid snags to my scarf but honestly the look doesn’t need it! For an extra accent, I wore some decorative tights. Let me know what you think of the entire look! Oh and be sure to check out my first post of Style Lusts here on my blog tomorrow!!

Casual Fridays: Body Con Dress

Usually I do love to wear some kind of denim on Fridays, it just seems so right…right? Well, today my friends I will showcasing how I wear a casual outfit without the denim. I decided on wearing a bodycon dress, which is quite comfortable, that I purchased from Fashion Nova. To me, being casual depends much on my comfort. If I can’t be comfortable, I feel that I might as well be dressed up formal. At least I’d be uncomfortable yet snazzy in a dramatic way lol.

Today’s look I would definitely wear on a date night, girls night out, or a fun event! I happen to love stripes so this dress grabbed my attention. I paired the dress with a faux leather jacket I picked up while thrifting and a pair of open toe, knee high boots from Nasty Gal. I’ve had these boots for a year or so but they are still on the site, I’m pretty sure. They have that little peek a boo feature in the back that add that extra bit of detail. I know you’ve seen this necklace before, it’s one of my faves it was really cheap. I bought it from Aliexpress.

I had a slight issue with my look. I wore two different pairs of sunnies. The first, I once loved, now I hate lol. They give me that “bug” look that I can’t stand so I will be purging them, immediately. I grabbed a different pair and was much more satisfied with the look. This is a quick outfit for last minute plans. Let me know what you think!! I’m going to get out of here because it’s Friday!!! See you back here Monday for another look!!

Bye Cupcakes!!

"Back to the Future" Me…

(Warning: This post is long and full of honesty, proceed at your own risk lol.)

I had the opportunity to meet with an amazing blogger and to pick her brain about some things. I can’t even begin to tell you how much that one little meeting helped me get back to me.

As I began blogging several years back, I started it to just share things that I loved and things that I was (not really but kind of) obsessed with. I actually called that blog “Simple Obsessions”. That blog was about me and it shared my thoughts and interests. Before then, I had a blog on Blogspot. For some reason, I wasn’t the slightest bit interested in what I was blogging about at that time but that was way before social media and before blogging became “this thing”.

Fast forward to now, I must say that I enjoy blogging now. I truly do. I had gone through a period of discouragement because I had lost who I was in the process of this blogging thing. Blogging is an outlet for me because as a wife and mom, I had gotten swallowed up in my responsibilities. I wanted to be able to express myself again as a woman. I want to share my thoughts, my experiences and my interests. I’m doing that. Along the way however, I allowed myself to become irritated and discouraged. Blogger competition, copying (without giving credit), insincerity and pettiness drained my spirit. I mean some bloggers will literally follow you just to watch and mimic almost everything you do. Sort of like keeping a finger on your pulse sort of speak. Some want to use you for their convenience. I’m just not into blogging for all of that. I’m not a cocky person (at all) and am actually working on my shyness so I at times I was quiet and unsure afraid of hurting someone’s feelings or being judged. I let that go!! No more!! I had to find and pick myself up again. I’m a confident individual who will not apologize for who she is. My life mission is not to have everyone like me. It’s been my experience that the most honest and true-to-themselves people ARE NOT liked. I’m definitely okay with that. I’ve conquered being alone and not needing a bunch of people to tell me I’m awesome in order to believe that I am special.

Most people think there are strength in numbers. I learned to find my own strength as a teen. I could care less what people think of me because regardless, my life will go on. I’m way past my teen years, I’m old enough to have a teen of my own. But I digress lol. That pep talk with that very special and talented blogger brought me back to me. My thinking is so clear. This blogging thing is that, a thing. It is not what consumes me. I don’t care what the next person is doing (although I never have) nor do I care what support I don’t have from people that I know. When I first started my Instagram for this blog, no one (that knew me personally) knew that I had it. I did that on purpose and some eventually organically found me. I’m happy that that is the way that things went. That peace of mind, while building my Instagram was something that I loved. On Instagram, people come and go, numbers rise and fall (how dramatic did that sound?) lol but what matters are the people that stick around to watch the movement. Let me tell you, I have experienced some pettiness. I had a blogger get mad because I missed her comment. I’ve even had a blogger who must have talked about me so much that her family member sent me a friend request on Facebook, just to see what I was about and then unfriend me after their nosy “quest”. Trust that I notice more than what people think!! That’s pretty messy and juvenile right?! I have no time for that!! Smh. I just don’t care about what someone else is doing like that.

Through all the mess, I emerge again as myself, a person that happens to blog what she loves. Not everything will be fashion over here. I am a jack of all trades and want to share that. I can’t wait to show you guys pictures of my beauty room!! Yes, I design and decorate home interiors too!! I have been asked about tips and products for hair growth because I make my own hair products and have grown my hair out in three years from a big chop. I will be sharing my “secrets” and products soon! I have a few things that I am working on. I will reveal when they are into fruition. Anyhoo, all of us need a pep talk back to reality. I had that and am forever grateful. I’m having fun again and it feels so good. I call myself the “little engine that could” because I am and I will always be “doing” and moving forward until I’ve accomplished my goals! Thank you to all that follow my journey!!! (Insert heart emojis here.) This post has been refreshing and liberating at the same time. Check out my picture below, they depict that! Carefree babes!!! Until, Friday…

Walk Fashion Show (11/2015)

I had the opportunity of being invited to the hottest fashion show in the Detroit Area, the Walk Fashion Show. This is the second time that I have been able to attend although not the first time I’ve been invited. This happens to be my favorite fashion show because it showcases some of the most faaaabbbbulous designers in the metro area. This show shares the talents of designers, models and the styling abilities of boutiques alike. I didn’t get to see all of the designers and boutiques presenting but I got some good highlights. I wish I had gotten to see Thrift on The Ave present their fashions but

check out the @walkfashionshow on Instagram like I did to see some of the items presented by them. I have a little load of pictures below that are some of my favorite designs. Let me know which outfit or piece shown is your favorite….
See you guys back here tomorrow @ 3:30 pm est sharp for another outfit post!!

Bye Cupcakes!!
