Thift & Vintage: Modernizing "Old" Fashion

My love for vintage and thrifting dates back to about year 2000. At that time, I loved being able to find things I liked and needed for a insignificant price point. Cha-Ching!! Well, now I tend to thrift for the fun of it. The thrill of finding cools things for cheap is my kind of shopping. Some people are scared to shop at thrift stores for fear of only finding dirty, old & “outdated” clothing. You can absolutely snag great items for less in the thrift store. If you love thrifting and/or saving money, this two part series is for you!!

I thought it would be fun to do a series that features items that are either thrifted or vintage to show these items can be styled to look youthful and modern. Eventually, I would love to do a video taking you with me on a shopping trip to find an outfit (excluding shoes & jewelry) for less than 15 bucks!!

Anyhoo, on to the outfit and tips. Thrifted outfits do not have to look ragged, thrifted, nor “old lady” inspired lol. The key to shopping thrift is:

1. Look for items that have a detail that you can center an outfit around. (Ex, sequin, bold prints, etc.)

2. Try to find “timeless” pieces. These never go “out of style” and provide a nice base for a great outfit.

3. Vintage clothing “fits” differently than the current making of clothing. Only buy what compliments your body.*

*I will talk about wearing clothing that compliments the body in the very near future.* Feel free to check out my Instagram and hit that follow button! You never know when I may decide to post a look without blogging it!

#MeijerStyle Clothing Review

If you have taken a peek at my Instagram (@citygirlstylecake) lately or checked out my last post, you can see that I showcased a cream colored lace cardigan. I truly love this cardigan and I wanted to share my review of it. First of all, I saw an ad in a fashion magazine (I can’t remember which) that showed the cardigan with the price point and availability. Most lace cardigans I’ve seen are quite expensive in my opinion for good quality. I searched for a long time so I was happy to find this one.

Review:

Price Point- I loved the price point of 20 bucks!! If you are on a budget or simply like a good deal then you understand my excitement! I have compared some other brands/stores for similar styles and other maxi lace cardigans and this is honestly the most affordable for the quality. I was also provided a 20% off coupon (in the fashion magazine) and so I was fortunate to get an even better deal than just the price itself.

Quality- The quality of this cardigan was comparable to an item of clothing that you would probably find at an H&M or Target. I have yet to wash this item but when I do, I will update this post. The lace is not too thin that you can poke a hole without much effort. The stitch work is pretty decent, in fact I was expecting some stray threads but there weren’t. I think the quality is again, pretty darn good for 20 bucks.

Style/Design- The style of this cardigan boasts a maxi length and long sleeves. There is no way to close the cardigan. In fact, my only complaint is that I wish there was more fabric so that I could close it if I needed to. I have a larger “bottom” which actually prevented me from being able to get the cardigan anywhere near being closed. This wasn’t a big deal because my look didn’t call for the outfit to be polished, hence no need to close the cardigan. If you have a larger bottom, I would suggest going up a size.

All in all, I would buy this cardigan again. I purchased another cardigan and will do an ootd and review on it later. I saw other items at Meijer that I was shockingly in the urge to buy. There are a lot of nice pieces that are modern and trendy. Meijer has a variety basic tanks, tees as well as graphic tees, sweaters and sweatshirts. Jessica Simpson has a clothing line in Meijer and the items have great quality! To see some of the items of Meijer clothing section, check out #meijerstyle on Instagram.

So I Missed Coachella…

Coachella was this past weekend and I missed it lol. Just kidding. I live in Michigan and due to life’s responsilbilities, I was at home…in Michigan both weekends lol. Anyhoo, in the spirit of Coachella, I decided to dress the part when we had 75 degree weather. My clothing pieces were purchased from a few places I don’t normally shop but will start to. I am learning my body all over again (due to weight loss and continuing a self-made health/fitness program) and I am back in the process of re-learning and developing my style. I realize that not everything in fashion that I love will look good on me nor compliment my body. (I will discuss this in a later post). I absolutely loved my outfit and am quite proud of this post! One of these years, I will attend Coachella but for now I’ll just look the part!

Peace!

Wardrobe Staples: Nudes-Part One

I am forever evolving and changing in my style. Quite frankly, I’ll be most stylish when I’m most comfortable in my skin. That will likely be when I get to my goal weight and body. That being said, I am in the process of again revamping my wardrobe. I am in the mood for nudes, light pinks, white, beige and light gray colors. I’m getting tired of much color and my particular fancy of the grunge look. I’m enjoying softer colors and silhouettes in clothing. Spring is the season to get rid of clothing rarely worn and to also grab new staple items to build a wardrobe on. I’m enjoying simplicity in my styling lately. I compiled some of my fave staple pieces below that I am lusting after. I will be doing a fashion haul very soon! What are you favorite fashion picks at the moment?

Overalls, Bodysuits & Rainy Days

I LOVE rainy days. Movies, snuggling, sitting in a comfy chair while looking out at the rain are all great variables for a great time at home on a rainy day. Days like this, I enjoy being at the movies. My outfit is comfy for relaxing in those big chairs but still fashionable enough for a “stylinista” like myself. Most days, I’m too lazy or I’m at the gym so I don’t dress up that often (although it doesn’t seem that way). Anyhoo, this crazy weather has confused my emotions about what I want to wear. Today was cold, warm, balmy, foggy, windy,  threatened by a tornado and rainy with late evening-like skies all day long. Smh. Crazy right?! Well, I dressed for it. I opted for an umbrella instead of a handbag due to this crazy spring weather and strappy wedges for comfort. The shirt around my waist is strategically placed just in case I got cold (I got warmer lol) and hardly any accessories except for my name necklace against my trendy overalls. Check out the pics below…

Grunge Rock Star Behavior

Whew hoo! Somewhat of a spring is finally here!! Remember the age old saying “April showers brings May flowers”? Well it was raining on day two of April without fail. I was hoping the rain would visit only briefly but hope doesn’t always float! Lol. Anyhoo, I dressed for the happy gloom of finally being able to go out without a coat due to temperature but kind of needing one because of constant rain. I opted out of wearing a coat for this outfit. Let me know what you think of my styling this time!

"Baby It's Cold Outside"

If you live anywhere in the north of the country, it’s not warm….even though it’s officially spring. Ugh! This bi- polar weather is so confusing. I want to put up my winter wear but it’s just not time.  Well, I decided to mix winter and spring with this outfit. Let me know what you think!

Style Series: (Sweatshirt) & Pumps

*Sings* “Just one of them days…” Well, not one of THOSE days but…

It’s one of those days that I don’t feel like dressing up, but I don’t want to be bummy either. Ugh, the dilemma right? I found this cute graphic sweatshirt in my closet and paired it with some cute jeans. I was supposed to upload this last Saturday but life, well, you know. Let me know what you think of my get-up!

Style Series: (Sweatshirt) Chic

It’s starting to feel like spring!

To me, late winter/early spring is perfect sweatshirt weather. I decided to do a two-part style series showcasing sweatshirts. Sometimes sweatshirts get a bum rap but if styled, they can be very chic. The sweatshirt I purchased is not typical in thickness so layering worked. What I love is the obvious label of “sweat shirt” on the front.   Check out how I styled it and let me know what you think!
