The Concept of Color Block

So with the back and forth of warm and cool weather, dressing and planning a look is like playing the guessing game. I like to keep a good coat in my wardrobe in case of style emergencies so I grabbed a trench I had to round out the concept of this look.

One of the hardest concepts to pull off successfully is color blocking. Why? Well, it’s definitely easy to pile on too many colors and to appear too matcha-matchy. The key to color blocking (for beginners) is building around a color that you want to “pop” or stand out with neutral colors. I would suggest grabbing a color that is your favorite bold color and allow that to take “center stage” while blocking with colors that are absolutely neutral. I say absolutely because nude is neutral however it has “tones” that can be hard to figure out which goes well with your own skin tone. Try starting with black, white, or another primary color. If you are unsure about color blocking, you can also contrast colors for ease of manipulation of color. If you have a question, please ask me! (smile)  I’ll explain more in my pictures….

Trendy But Not?

One of the biggest trends right now is denim. Although I’m not one to jump on the trendy bandwagon, this trend is really something I’m grabbing a hold of. If you haven’t checked out my “Style Lusts”, please do. I discussed the different options that are out there for those that want to explore this very popular trend.

Well, here I am displaying how I wear this trend. *Disclaimer: I realize that this coat has gotten way to big on me. In a short period of time, my body has changed. Although the scale hasn’t moved much, my body says different, I’m shrinking but building muscle. I will have a fitness update coming soon.* I grabbed my denim trench coat purchased from a popular and stylish spot in Detroit on Cass Avenue called Thrift On The Ave. I paused it very simply with a warm bodycon dress from United Front, also a company based in Detroit. I added bold accessories and open to knee high boots for a sassy look. I’m hoping for warmer weather soon to crank out more looks!

“In Living Color”

*As promised, here is more of a complicated look.* (wink)

So lately I’ve been in a mood for simple looks with calming colors. However, I have to insert looks here and there that make the eyes dance! I enjoy colors so much!! I mean, there are so many colors in life so why not explore and live in color? (Insert colorful heart emojis here). I found the main event sort to speak, of this outfit while out thrifting. There is absolutely nothing like finding a great piece that stands out. The piece I found is actually a short dress but it is way too short for my taste to wear as such. Therefore, I am wearing it as a tunic.

The colors are so bold and bright that I wanted to highlight them even more by grabbing a contrast print. I chose a black and white chevron clutch bag by Turquoise Soul Bags. The black and white really forces the bold colors of the tunic to pop. You can’t help but to notice both and in an unexpected way, they compliment each other. Since the weather is between 45 and 55 degrees lately, wearing a leather jacket is opportunistic without the threat of freezing. I opted for one of my fave black ones. I decided on some knee high open toe lace up boots on top of black leggings to complete the ensemble for an illusion of wearing just a short dress and tights. Modesty. For a funky kick, I am wearing a hat I bought earlier this year from Boohoo. The hat adds more of an eclectic yet structured touch. The gold cuff choker keeps the look in a glamorous balance. My jewelry is minimal so as so not take away from the stylist-ic (made that up lol) look of the outfit. Let me know what you think!! I welcome comments!! If you are not, follow me on Instagram, I always post my looks there plus some things I don’t post to my blog. Thank you in advance for your feedback and don’t forget to join me back here Friday for another outfit post!

What Bloggers Do…

Initially, I was going to title this post by another name but I thought that it would just be fun to highlight some of the mishaps that happen to us bloggers…or at least happens to me as a blogger lol. So this is a behind the scenes sort of information post with the final results in pictures.

I got ready for this shoot, and as always, I do my makeup first. My hair is under this hat secretly (not so much a secret now lol) because it was wash day. Since I have so much hair to wash, I need HOURS to do this hair and I didn’t have that time appropriated, the hat that I am wearing became more than a fashion statement. I opted for a bold statement necklace from Purple Love (that I LOVE, not pun intended) and no earrings because every other accessory I am wearing is so bold. My bracelet is a coin charm style bracelet that I purchased from Forever 21 some ten years back. My bag is from JustFab and I think this particular style of bags is still on the site right now. My shoes were purchased from Urbanog.com years ago but this style came back around and you should be able to find something very similar on the site. I wanted to be warm but add a little funk to the outfit so I decided to wear some foot in leggings. My husband knew I had been looking for some and bought them from Target for me.

My fave part of this look happens to be the cardigan and the skater dress. I bought the skater dress a year ago from Forever 21 and they are still being sold on the Forever 21 online if you are interested. My cardigan was purchased from Naked Wardrobe online. I love this site so much as they have trendy items that can also be staple pieces in the wardrobe. The cardigan is a classy piece and adds this class to my outfit. It honestly is the highlight in my opinion. I love it so much I also bought it in black. In getting ready, I tore a hole in my dress (in the seam) trying to pull off a tag and then I also almost tore my cardigan because it got caught on my heel. Between NEEDING my hat, tearing my dress and almost snagging my sheer cardigan, this was one heck of a shoot!! Lol. Some of the things us bloggers go through. Not much but whew! For all of my hard work lol, please tell me what you think of my look!! I’ll be back Wednesday with another look!!

Until tomorrow for a Vox Box review…
