Thift & Vintage: Modernizing "Old" Fashion

My love for vintage and thrifting dates back to about year 2000. At that time, I loved being able to find things I liked and needed for a insignificant price point. Cha-Ching!! Well, now I tend to thrift for the fun of it. The thrill of finding cools things for cheap is my kind of shopping. Some people are scared to shop at thrift stores for fear of only finding dirty, old & “outdated” clothing. You can absolutely snag great items for less in the thrift store. If you love thrifting and/or saving money, this two part series is for you!!

I thought it would be fun to do a series that features items that are either thrifted or vintage to show these items can be styled to look youthful and modern. Eventually, I would love to do a video taking you with me on a shopping trip to find an outfit (excluding shoes & jewelry) for less than 15 bucks!!

Anyhoo, on to the outfit and tips. Thrifted outfits do not have to look ragged, thrifted, nor “old lady” inspired lol. The key to shopping thrift is:

1. Look for items that have a detail that you can center an outfit around. (Ex, sequin, bold prints, etc.)

2. Try to find “timeless” pieces. These never go “out of style” and provide a nice base for a great outfit.

3. Vintage clothing “fits” differently than the current making of clothing. Only buy what compliments your body.*

*I will talk about wearing clothing that compliments the body in the very near future.* Feel free to check out my Instagram and hit that follow button! You never know when I may decide to post a look without blogging it!

So I Missed Coachella…

Coachella was this past weekend and I missed it lol. Just kidding. I live in Michigan and due to life’s responsilbilities, I was at home…in Michigan both weekends lol. Anyhoo, in the spirit of Coachella, I decided to dress the part when we had 75 degree weather. My clothing pieces were purchased from a few places I don’t normally shop but will start to. I am learning my body all over again (due to weight loss and continuing a self-made health/fitness program) and I am back in the process of re-learning and developing my style. I realize that not everything in fashion that I love will look good on me nor compliment my body. (I will discuss this in a later post). I absolutely loved my outfit and am quite proud of this post! One of these years, I will attend Coachella but for now I’ll just look the part!

Peace!

Wardrobe Staples: Nudes-Part One

I am forever evolving and changing in my style. Quite frankly, I’ll be most stylish when I’m most comfortable in my skin. That will likely be when I get to my goal weight and body. That being said, I am in the process of again revamping my wardrobe. I am in the mood for nudes, light pinks, white, beige and light gray colors. I’m getting tired of much color and my particular fancy of the grunge look. I’m enjoying softer colors and silhouettes in clothing. Spring is the season to get rid of clothing rarely worn and to also grab new staple items to build a wardrobe on. I’m enjoying simplicity in my styling lately. I compiled some of my fave staple pieces below that I am lusting after. I will be doing a fashion haul very soon! What are you favorite fashion picks at the moment?

Overalls, Bodysuits & Rainy Days

I LOVE rainy days. Movies, snuggling, sitting in a comfy chair while looking out at the rain are all great variables for a great time at home on a rainy day. Days like this, I enjoy being at the movies. My outfit is comfy for relaxing in those big chairs but still fashionable enough for a “stylinista” like myself. Most days, I’m too lazy or I’m at the gym so I don’t dress up that often (although it doesn’t seem that way). Anyhoo, this crazy weather has confused my emotions about what I want to wear. Today was cold, warm, balmy, foggy, windy,  threatened by a tornado and rainy with late evening-like skies all day long. Smh. Crazy right?! Well, I dressed for it. I opted for an umbrella instead of a handbag due to this crazy spring weather and strappy wedges for comfort. The shirt around my waist is strategically placed just in case I got cold (I got warmer lol) and hardly any accessories except for my name necklace against my trendy overalls. Fur, Velvet, Snow & Such….

I’ve been apprehensive since I started this blog about posting fashion looks. So, I’m being very transparent in this post when I say that I have a fear of failure and not being able to measure up to myself and what I expect to become. Welp, I’ve decided this year that I need to be adventurous and willing to take risks! So….here I go! The weather is not necessarily permitting but this snow is not going anywhere anytime soon. I decided to incorporate a little velvet (velour), fur, leather AND of course, snow! Please let me know what you think of my first fashion post/ootd! Peace!

P.S. I was an event for The Lip Bar.
(Blog post on the event will be up Monday).

JustFab.com Review

If you have not already, soon you will realize that I am a shoe feen so I like to show and review shoes that I deem fabulous. Speaking of fabulous, I think it’s time that I review a subscription company for shoes: JustFab.com. This site has been reviewed by others and is one of many subscription services but opinions are like belly buttons so yes…I have an opinion. I’ve made more than one purchase from JustFab so this review is over a longer period because mishaps don’t happen during the first order necessarily. I made an order on February 15, 2014 and February 18, 2014. Here are where the “mishaps” occur. I was on Instagram and saw a post of a shoe that I was previously not so excited about. The picture changed my mind. I made my purchase for not only the shoe that I saw on Instagram but also a bag and a pair of sandals that I had been lusting over. I have a tendency to not be trusting so I felt the need to check on my order status after two days. When I checked my orders, neither budged from the warehouse. In fact, one of the orders failed fulfillment. I called Justfab to get some insight on why my order failed, (and why I was not notified). The first person I spoke to seemed helpful enough. She claimed the sandal “Gillian” was out of stock (even though it did not say that on the Justfab site) and that’s why my order “failed fulfillment”. She promised that she would get my order out asap with ALL of the items included with rush shipping. I was temporarily comforted and relieved. The next day, I decided to check on my status again. Both of my orders had been cancelled! I was annoyed at this point. I called Justfab again and spoke with another person who told me I had been charged for the cancelled orders but that she could re-order my items and charge my card…again. I was furious so she suggested I wait until I was refunded my money to place the order again. The problem? One of the items I wanted was very low in stock and she added that the item might not be in stock by the time I order again. I was so frustrated at her non-chalant attitude that I hung up. I called back later that night and a very helpful person answered. He listened to my frustrations and promised to take care of everything. He did just that. He put a rush on the order and gave me free rush shipping. The order was at my door in two days. I had combined both orders into one. I am LOVE with the items I got. My experience with Justfab was tricky but the last representative bettered my experience. My shoes and handbag helped as well. Both shoes fit great and the handbag is so classy and versatile. Check out my pics below and let me know how your experience with Justfab has been if you are a member. If you’re not a member, I can send you an invitation if you’re interested. Also, which item do you think is your favorite of my picks this month?
*Update: I was recently informed by a Justfab representative that the rewards program has changed. They no longer offer a credit for a free pair of shoes when you gather enough points. There are knick-knacks that you can choose from instead. I just wanted to pass on that information to all those who are customers and those thinking about becoming customers. Hope this info helps!

In the Mood for “Mints”

I was hesitant at first but I gave into Jewelmint and Shoemint. Yes…I didn’t think that I would EVER be interested in either but we all know the saying: “never say never”. I now have an abundance of Mint products but it was my recent purchases from Shoemint that has me stoked. I purchased Pauline in wine first, as I was immediately drawn to these. I loved the sleek and abnormal design. The color is one that I do not have in my shoe collection. Score! When I received the shoes I was just as happy as when I first saw them on the site, plus I got a free Night Owl necklace with my purchase. The shipping was great and I am a stickler about shipping because I HATE waiting on packages. It was an all around good experience with Shoemint so I decided to make another purchase after I saw a video on YT that showcased yet another pair of Shoemints: the coveted “Edith” in blush. When this shoe came in the mail and I saw them “live” I fell helplessly in love. These shoes are not what I am normally drawn to but I am happy I took a chance. They fit perfect (I’d suggest ordering a full size up), the quality is great and they are comfortable. I saw this shoe on Steve Madden’s website for about $124, so I think for $49.99 these shoes are a steal! I paid $49.99 because I used a coupon code for $30 off. The Shoemint membership is $79.99 a month but you can “skip” a month for free if you’d like. I try to always use a coupon code so I’ve never paid full price for a Mint product. If you like the pics you see, take a peak at Shoemint!

My Lust for Calcagni…

Out the box.

So…I decided that I needed a bit of a statement shoe, one that is nothing like I already have. Browsing Aldo shoes website, I found the “for now” lust of my life, lol: the Calcagni wedge.  The interesting part is that I ordered them on-line, along with a 10% discount and received them in the mail. Upon receiving them, I noticed something rather interesting. The price of the shoe on the box was $20 cheaper than what is listed on-line. I immediately called the the customer service to find out if this was just the way pricing is at Aldo. The customer service rep was confused and wanted to make sure that I was correct about my finding (which is understandable) and so she checked my order and the price of the shoe on-line. She determined that I should have only paid a gross amount of $100 and not the $120 that I did pay. I was told to send in my receipt and that the difference would be sent back to me. I was elated! Thanks Aldo! Now, on to the REAL review. The shoes are VERY nice and I am so happy that I was able to purchase these. They are truly the statement shoes that I was looking for. The bold red color, hidden wedge and suede material speak volumes!! There also appears to a place to insert a strap that goes around the ankle. I must warn: for those that do not know, Aldo shoes always run a size or two smaller, depending on the shoe. Remember if you want these, order up a size or two. I got a size 40 and I wear a size 7.5 or 8 depending on the maker of the shoe. They are a tiny bit big but the 39 would have been uncomfortable and I’d rather be in shoes a little bit too big than too small. If you are not able to get your hands on this gorgeous shoe, there is a great alternative made by the Luchiny brand. The name of the shoe is the Sur-Fer Wedge in the color red. In fact, there are more colors including blue, gray, tan and camel. Check out my pic and enjoy!!
